I know many Houstonians are on Day 4 without power and feeling hot and cranky. But, if you have the means to get out of your house, then here are some places to cool off around the city and the outskirts. If you can’t travel far, there are some cooling centers and some libraries open across the city. Also, I love these ideas on how to stay sane after Hurricane Beryl from Houstonia.

Asia Society Texas Center

Asia Society Texas Center, located in the Museum District, is offering free admission to their exhibitions through Sunday. The center also recently opened Sunday Press, a new cafe offering breakfast and lunch. While you’re there, check out the final weekend of Xu Bing: World Alchemy, which highlights more than 50 works from the renowned Chinese artist.

Relax at a Bookstore

Some bookstores are still closed because of power outages, but there are some open with air-conditioning, WiFi, and books to read. Inside the Loop, you can check out Brazos Bookstore, Kindred Stories, Basket Books & Art, and CLASS Bookstore. If you live in the burbs, head to the new LIT Bookbar in Fort Bend, or Spring Branch’s The Library Wine Bar.

Visit a Museum for Free

Check out the Contemporary Arts Museum, which always offer free admission. The Children’s Museum Houston is hosting free family night today with special hours between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is also open and offers free admission every Thursday.

Treat Yourself to a Meal

Many Houston restaurants are opening up after Hurricane Beryl, but make sure to check their social media or call ahead before you go. Some restaurants are open with limited menus or for limited hours. Eater Houston has a fantastic ongoing list of open restaurants.
