One thing about Houston winters: they’re unpredictable. The past few weeks illustrate this perfectly. We’ve had freezing temperatures, flooding rain, and then warm and sunny days. So, how can you prepare? What should you buy? Also, when is there some light at the end of the unpredictable Houston winter tunnel?

How To Prepare

So, one misconception about Houston is that it doesn’t get cold. That’s a lie. The last few winters have brought record-breaking winter freezes.

  • You’ll want to prepare for some frigid days, especially in January and February when freezing temperatures are more predictable.
  • Houston has solid weather experts that will provide thorough updates on what to expect daily. I enjoy following Space City Weather, the ABC-13 meteorologists, and Houston Chronicle’s weather team.
  • You’ll want to layer throughout the winter. Some mornings will start off frigid, but warm up by the afternoon. Invest in a durable winter and rain coat.
  • Prepare your home when freezing temperatures approach. This is a good, thorough checklist to follow.

What To Buy

During Winter Storm Uri in 2021, we experienced power outages for days. As you prepare, think realistically, what would it look like for you to live without power and heat for a few days and what you might need.

  • Make an emergency kit that includes items such as flashlights, candles, non-electric can-opener, first aid kit, cash, portable radio, whistle, portable charger, hand sanitizer, wet wipes
  • Also, you’ll want to stock up on non-perishables and lots of water. Do it now, so you can avoid the crowds at the grocery store before the next freeze. Here’s a great list of 100 plus non-perishable food items that don’t expire for a long time.
  • If you’re thinking of driving during a winter freeze, don’t. It can be extremely dangerous. During the freeze earlier this month, Houston Police responded to more than 100 weather-related crashes. However, it’s worth it to invest in this AAA Winter Roadside Emergency Kit in case you have to drive and get stuck on the roads.

The Light At The End of The Tunnel?

As one familiar weather saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait 10 minutes.” This is especially true during the winter. Although we might have cold days, we’ll definitely have some warm and sunny days this winter. Soak them up! The light is coming. Once we get into March and April, that’s when you’ll experience some of the prettiest days in Houston.

Now that you’re prepared, find out whether we’re going to lose power during another winter freeze or not. Also, send me other tips for surviving Houston’s unpredictable winters.
