Earth Day is coming up on Monday, April 22. Besides volunteer opportunities happening this weekend, what other ways can you celebrate the big day in Houston?
Visit Houston’s Outdoor Spaces
- When’s the last time you had a picnic outside? Spend time at Hermann Park’s new area The Commons. Relax in their new spaces, The Central Lawn or the Live Oak Terrace, which are perfect places to gather for a picnic with family or friends.
- Everyone in Houston knows about Discovery Green, but have you checked out Trebly Park, a smaller park also located downtown? Enjoy their dog park, playground area, or grab a bite from Tout Suite Cafe. On Thursday, grab the family for a special showing of Wall-E underneath the stars.
- Check out Houston Botanic Garden, another hidden gem in the city. This weekend, you can take a class on growing container gardens, participate in an epic beer hunt, or learn a community dance routine. On Earth Day, the garden will unveil “Wild Texas,” a new mural along the Sims Bayou Greenway.
Other Ways To Celebrate Earth Day
- Make a trip to Space Center Houston for their annual Planet Earth celebration. At this special event, you can learn about food waste, recycle your e-waste, learn how to build a carbon capture unit, and experience a guided exploration of Earth.
- Enjoy a free Earth Day concert with music celebrating springtime from the Monarch Chamber Players at Mandell Park, on Saturday at noon.
- Make sure to RSVP for this free event on Saturday at Evelyn’s Park in Bellaire, where you can listen to live music, participate in a community rock painting project, learn about recycling, and build your own water bottle terrarium.
- Spend your Sunday at Terry Hershey Park for the Energy Corridor’s Earth Day Celebration, featuring a live DJ, food trucks, tree seedling giveaways, and more.
