When I was a Spring Branch ISD elementary school student, lunchtime meant I could finally eat something delicious and talk to my friends without getting in trouble. This is the jackpot for a third grader who sometimes got "too talkative" written on her school report card.

I looked forward to Pizza Hut Thursdays, where, yes, we got a slice (or two!) of pizza at lunch. I also found myself reaching for the package of powdered donuts toward the end of the line way too many times. Nowadays, it looks like Pizza Hut Thursdays have been replaced by run-of-the-mill pizza from the cafeteria. Womp womp. My beloved powdered donuts have been replaced by apple slices, oranges, and grapes. So, how has school lunch changed since we were kids? Here’s the full breakdown of what’s being served now compared to what I ate in the ‘90s.

I guess I gotta go to Taco Bell now for my Mexican pizza fix! And of course, are we surprised that chicken tenders never go out of style? 😉 Check out this 1970s vintage lunch menu from Houston ISD if you want to reminisce even more about school lunch back in the day.
