Some people may not realize Houston has great outdoor spaces to wander and bask in the sun. As we march closer towards spring and those perfect patio weather days, here are some spots you should visit.
Hermann Park
If you’re looking for Houston’s own version of Central Park, then this is the place. Hermann is perfect for a long walk, jog, or a bike ride. In case you’re an animal lover, The Houston Zoo is right next door. I enjoy sitting by McGovern Lake and watching people on the pedal boats. Make sure to stop by this cute little cafe, Ginger Kale, before you leave.

Sam Houston National Forest
If you want a quick escape from the bustling city, then make the mini-road trip to the Sam Houston National Forest. Take a long hike on the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which stretches for 129 miles. Get your camping on at Cagle, Double Lake, and Stubblefield Recreation Areas. Rent a canoe or paddle boat at Double Lake’s concession stand. Finally, do some fishing at Lake Livingston or Lake Conroe.
Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
If you’re looking for a calming oasis, then you’ll want to check out this place. Take a hike on one of the countless trails. If you’re looking to learn more about plants and improve your gardening skills, sign up for a class. The Arboretum also has fun activities for adults at night, like this nighttime mystery hike.
Buffalo Bayou
I love strolling along the bayou, taking in the magnificent views of the Houston skyline. Eleanor Tinsley Park is also the perfect place for a picnic with friends, family, or a special someone. If you enjoy skateboarding, make sure to stop by Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark. I miss The Dunlavy, a charming restaurant that used to be next to the Bayou, but I’m excited to try out Flora, a Mexican restaurant that opened up last year.
I couldn’t list all of Houston’s amazing outdoor spaces, so make sure to check out this round-up of the best parks from Houstonia.
