If you’re a creative person in Houston, this neighborhood is made for you. Only a few minutes away from downtown, Sawyer Yards is one of the largest creative spaces in the U.S. for artists. You can also go rock climbing, grab a drink at a brewery, and get some shopping done. Let’s go on an adventure!
The Creative Spaces
Throughout the year, this creative complex displays beautiful work from local artists. Today, you can stop by a new exhibition opening, “Scenes From Films I’ll Never Make,” which features 10 new oil paintings inspired by film ideas and the artist Maloney's own mental health struggles. This weekend, check out their monthly Second Saturday Art Ramble, and take in spectacular art and meet local artists at more than 100 studios on the grounds. Finally, check out “Oluseyi Soyege: Fundamental Livelihood,” a new exhibition on view until Oct. 12, that highlights portraits of people in the labor force, using physical materials such as nails, woods, fabric and thread.
Start A New Hobby
Are you looking to start a new hobby this fall? Writespace, a literary arts nonprofit, offers creative writing classes, mentoring, and editing services for aspiring writers. I’ve taken a couple classes with them and enjoyed stretching my writing muscles. Looking for something more adventurous? Go rock climbing, or take a yoga class at Momentum Indoor Climbing.
Grab A Drink And Explore
If you’re a beer or cider fan, then you should try City Orchard or Holler Brewing Co or the newest brewery at the complex, Tejas. After you enjoy a drink, then stroll through Silver Street’s open artist studios on the third Saturday of each month. You can chat with over 60 international artists and admire a variety of art, including fine art photography, jewelry, sculpture, painting, and more.
