Why Is Brisket So Damn Expensive?

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo kicks off next week, which means I’m already daydreaming about devouring all the delicious food. I especially can’t wait to visit The Ranch Saloon + Steakhouse and check it off my food bucket list. This first-of-its-kind restaurant is coming back to the rodeo on Feb. 27, offering both casual and fine dining for rodeo guests.

What To Expect

The restaurant is divided into two dining experiences: The Saloon and the Steakhouse. The Saloon is for casual cowboys and cowgirls interested in a laid-back dining environment. Besides eating tasty food, you can also order drinks from their live bar or sit on their outdoor covered patio, The Porch. The Saloon also features live music and DJs, so you can dance the night away. The Steakhouse requires reservations, and is for the fancy pants rodeo crowd who want to enjoy a 240-seat luxury dining experience.

What To Order

Before your main course at the Steakhouse, start out with some of their mouth-watering starters like the Jumbo Lump crab cake, crispy calamari, or The Annie tortilla soup. For the main course, you’ve gotta try one of their steaks, either the Wagyu Ribeye or the Kobe Sirloin. If you’re not in the mood for steak, indulge in their mushroom rigatoni, Snake River Farms pork chop, or the pan-seared salmon. The Saloon offers more down-home options like a classic cheeseburger, quesadillas, barbecue ribs, and a crawfish platter.

What’s New This Year

The Skillet will serve classic carnival food such as their deep-fried, churro-crusted, nutella-filled “Cowboy Croissants” through a walk-up window. Get your drink on at four different satellite bars, each of which will be serving only one type of drink or spritz, or grab a margarita at the tequila bar. Finally, check out “The Ranch After Dark,” a nightclub experience on Saturdays and Sundays.

Also, with rodeo season coming up, are barbecue restaurants planning to stop selling brisket because of rising costs?
