Houston’s Most Underrated Movie Theaters

00:00:00

Are you in a movie theater rut? Did you know the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston offers two theaters to watch some of your favorite films? The Brown Auditorium Theater and Lynn Wyatt Theater have film showings throughout the month. Let’s check it out!

Rich History of Film Screenings

The museum hosted its first film screening in January 1938. The film tradition continued when they opened Brown Auditorium Theater in 1974, and screened the 1973 documentary, “Painters Painting” and Otto Preminger’s 1959 drama, “Anatomy of a Murder.” Celebrated Houston filmmakers Richard Linklater and Wes Anderson regularly watched films at the museum. In 2021, the museum opened the Lynn Wyatt Theater in the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building — the only theaters in Houston that can show 35mm reel-to-reel projector films.

How to Watch a Film

First, check the museum’s weekly film schedule. Tickets for general admission are $9, but museum members receive a $2 discount. Some films may not be appropriate for younger audiences, so take caution if bringing children. You can purchase your tickets online, in person at the box office, or at the museum’s lobby during business hours. If you join the museum’s Film Buffs group, it includes at least 10 free admission tickets to museum films.
