Sugar Land, a suburb southwest of downtown Houston, isn’t a small town anymore. With more than 100,000 residents calling it home, it’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the state. In this diverse community, you’ll find a range of tasty eateries, relaxing spots, and rich history.

The Heart of Sugar Land

Sugar Land Town Square is a recreational destination in the heart of the city where you can shop and eat all day. Some restaurants you should add to your foodie list include Escalante’s, Flying Saucer, Japaneiro’s Sushi Bistro & Latin Grill, State Fare Kitchen and Bar, and Jupiter Pizza & Waffle Co. The square also has a giant green space, where kids can run and play to their heart’s content — perfect for tiring them out for a nap.

Let’s Play

Smart Financial Centre, a new 200,000 square foot entertainment hotspot, is a great place to see a concert. Watch the Sugar Land Space Cowboys play at Constellation Field. Visit Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Sugar Land location on Thursday through Sundays if you don’t want to fight Museum District traffic. Go for a walk or bike ride at Brazos River Park, which spans 67 acres.

Rich History

I spent years covering Sugar Land’s complicated history for the Houston Chronicle, so I urge you to check out the Sugar Land 95 exhibit at the James Reese Career and Technical Center. In 2018, the remains of 95 African-Americanswere found on a Fort Bend ISD construction site. The remains are believed to date back to the area’s convict leasing system, a brutal practice dubbed “slavery by another name.”
