I took my first trip to The Rienzi over the Christmas holiday with my parents. On our tour of the grounds, we awed over the beautiful artwork on the walls and the magnificent architecture. This historic mansion, owned by the Museum of FIne Arts, Houston, is tucked away in a River Oaks neighborhood, so you may have never seen it before. So, how can you visit?

A History Lesson

The Rienzi mansion was originally built in 1952 for philanthropists Carroll and Harris Masterson III and named after Materson’s grandfather, politician Rienzi Johnston. Landscape architect Ralph Gunn worked alongside architect John Staub to design the 4.4-acre property. The mansion was donated to the museum in 1997.

Let’s Go On A Tour

The mansion offers docent-led tours at various times throughout the week and on the weekends. You can also take your own self-guided tour. Besides learning more about the historic space, the Rienzi hosts music performances, art workshops, dinners, family programs, and other events. If you’re planning to visit, make sure to check the schedule. It’s open on Memorial Day this year!

Summer Fun

I perused the calendar for you, so here are some of my event recommendations. If you love art, then try out one of their Studio Saturdays, where you can learn about drawing and sketching fundamentals using the art on display in the Rienzi. Next month, they’re offering a behind-the-scenes tour of areas usually not on view at the mansion. For book lovers, join this book club that focuses on books about life in America and Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
