Lisa Gray writesPark Place, near my house in southeast Houston, is a particularly Houston kind of jumble: nature mixed with I-45 sprawl, modest apartment complexes next to one of the city's most hyper-groomed, Insta-worthy outdoor attractions.

A Walk in the Garden
That major attraction would be the new-ish Houston Botanic Garden. It's especially exciting for plant nerds like me, but lovely for anyone who appreciates a beautiful walk. My favorite parts are the fountains; the vegetable garden; and the lake with native plants. Ticket prices vary. They're usually $12.50-$15.

For Bird Nerds
Houston Audubon's Raptor and Education Center, a tiny gem of a wildlife sanctuary, is tucked away on River Drive, just across the bayou from the Botanic Garden's entrance. It's home to hawks, owls, and other rescued birds of prey, as well as prime birdwatching. The hours are eccentric; check that they'll be open before you go. $5.

Grab a Bite
Taquería del Sol has been serving Tex-Mex standards for more than 30 years. The crowded, cheerful main room is hung with bright-colored papel picado, and the huevos rancheros plate costs only $5. On the side of the restaurant facing I-45, a Donkeeboy mural honors Army specialist Jessica Guillen, a Chavez High grad who was murdered while serving at Fort Hood.
