Henderson & Kane, a general store and barbecue spot in Old Sixth Ward

This historic neighborhood sits west of downtown and features many buildings that were built between 1870 and 1900. It also has the largest concentration of Victorian houses in Houston. Besides the history, the neighborhood offers some pretty cool restaurants and bars to frequent. Below are some suggestions from me and newsletter reader Susan K.

🍴Let’s Eat

In this neighborhood, there are tons of spots for great food, so grab your stretchy pants. Try B.B. Lemon for Houston and New York inspired food and cocktails. Betelguese Betelguese offers delicious pizzas and drinks. For a more fancy night out, stop at B&B Butchers & Restaurant, an upscale steakhouse.

🍺 Let’s Brew

Check out Platypus Brewing for craft brews and excellent small shareables (hello, sliders and chips and queso!). Susan also recommends Henderson & Kane, a general store with a full barbecue menu.

🎉 Let’s Play

If you’re looking for a great karaoke spot, then trek a little further down Washington Avenue to Kung Fu Saloon. You can reserve one of their rooms for $50 an hour. I did it for my birthday a few years back, and highly recommend singing NSync at the top of your lungs. Puttery, on Washington Avenue, features mini-golf and craft cocktails.
