Your Guide to September in Houston

00:00:00

Can you believe it? We’re almost to fall in Houston, which means slightly cooler temperatures, festivals to celebrate the season, and other fun events across the city. If you’re not feeling the fall vibes yet, I hope this monthly guide will get you into the spirit 🍁

Spend the Day at Dewberry Farm

Find your first taste of fall at Dewberry Farm in Brookshire, about an hour west of Houston. The farm opens up for the season on Saturday, Sept. 14, and features a pumpkin patch, corn maze, ferris wheel, and plenty of photo opps for you and your loved ones. This year, they also have some new scary additions like their haunted barn and creepy corn maze. Enter at your own risk 😉

The First Home Football Game

Next stop, kick off the fall sports season at the Houston Texans first home game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Sept. 15. Even if you can’t snag tickets, City Cast Houston Host Raheel Ramzanali suggests getting there early to tailgate. At any Houston tailgate, you can find friendly fans, delicious food, and likely somebody doing the Wobble.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating one of Houston’s most popular Mexican eateries, El Bolillo Bakery. To celebrate their 26th anniversary, the bakery is offering discounts all this week on tortillas, conchas, and tres leches, ending with their big birthday party on Saturday, Sept. 6. Later this month, check out Festival de la Familia, a lively celebration of Hispanic culture, with live music, local vendors, and games for the whole family. Then, on Friday, Sept. 20 enjoy a magical night of ballet folklórico and mariachis at Discovery Green. More than 50 performers from Guadalajara Folkloric Ballet, the Mariachi Juvenil Colotlán, and other groups will move you.

Enjoy Fall Festivals

Take your little ones to the Mid-Autumn Festival at Children Museum’s Houston, where you can make lanterns, participate in a costume contest, watch their Soaring Phoenix Lion Dance, and enjoy a special storytime. At the end of September, your whole family can enjoy the Bat Fest at Houston Arboretum, where you can learn more about our local bats, participate in bat-themed activities and crafts, and eat from different food trucks.

Get Outside and Explore Houston’s Nature

Try out one of Houston Arboretum’s guided nature hikes, offered in both English and Spanish. Check out the new exhibit “Habitat” at the Houston Botanic Garden about preserving our environment for the future. Now that the temperatures are cooler, it’s also the perfect time to check out Hermann Park’s new space, The Commons, with new play areas for kids and a carousel.

Eat and Eat and Eat!

Good news: Houston Restaurant Weeks, the city’s annual fundraiser and discounted food event, has been extended through Sept. 30, so you can still check it out. If you love beer and barbecue, then you should also stop by Saint Arnold Brewery’s Houston BBQ Throwdown featuring 14 of Houston’s best barbecue restaurants.
