Kelsey Low of Houston Arboretum tells us about a unique ecosystem:
“When you see a fallen tree, take a closer look – you’ll find an entire ecosystem! The brown shell-like structures are shelf fungi and the brilliant orange lumps are jelly mushrooms; both are hard at work breaking down the wood. Normally brown and crispy, tiny resurrection ferns and mosses spring “back to life” after a good rain. The frilly gray-blue sheets are lichen, which are a combination of fungi, algae, and bacteria working together as a single organism.”
