Ethan Placke, a Houston Parks Board Conservation Technician, writes about the hummingbirds we start seeing here in the fall:

“The ruby-throated hummingbird is a bigger Houstonian than most realize! Houston Audubon says they are common during the fall and spring migration periods and are one of the most common hummingbirds around Houston."



"Hummingbirds frequently fight for territory with each other: Using their superb flying abilities they attempt to lance rivals with their beaks. No wonder Aztecs believed that when warriors died, they would be reincarnated as hummingbirds. Some Aztec kings even had entire capes made of hummingbird feathers.“
