If you spend enough time here, you’ll realize Houston has some magnificent trees. This Saturday, the Houston Arboretum salutes them at their annual Arbor Day celebration. There’ll be a tree hike, lumberjack games, and tree-climbing demonstrations. You can even buy your own tree! Pro tip: Late January is the best time to plant trees in Houston.
Kelsey Low of Houston Arboretum gives us a little more tree knowledge:
“There’s an old saying: 'Can’t see the forest for the trees.' It means focusing so much on details that you miss the big picture. However, seeing the trees can help you understand the forest! For example, the forest pictured above has Eastern Redcedar, Willow Oak, and Loblolly Pine. Redcedar tolerates drought, while the oak and pine love moisture – especially wet soils near bayous or ponds. This is a wet woodland that dries out periodically.”
