This spring has been warm and annoyingly wet sometimes, but it’s also brought fireflies! These glowy insects were recently spotted at the Houston Arboretum.
Kelsey Low, adult programs manager at Houston Arboretum, writes:
“Male Common Eastern Fireflies flash to attract a mate. They fly in a distinctive J-shaped pattern, which females will recognize and then flash back an answering signal. They need dark, quiet woodland edges for their nightly dance, which unfortunately are getting harder and harder to find. You can help fireflies by turning lights off at night, growing native grasses (for sheltering adult and baby fireflies), and supporting habitat conservation in Houston.”
