How Los Tios Became a Tex-Mex Hotspot

If you love Tex-Mex, then you’ve likely made a trip to one of Houston’s Los Tios locations. This popular Tex-Mex chain has remained a favorite among Houstonians for more than 50 years. So, how did it start and what dish should you order? Let’s get into it!

The Start of Los Tios

In 1970, Tom and Rosemary Garbett opened their first Los Tios location at Bissonnet and Fondren. The couple’s business venture quickly took off, but Tom died shortly after they opened their second location. Still, Rosemary pushed on and managed the growing operations. while also raising four young children.

In 1975, Los Tios introduced the first frozen margarita to Houstonians: a creamy blend of fresh lime juice and tequila. The restaurant eventually grew to six locations across the city After that, life was truly never the same.

Los Tios Today

Houston restaurant businessman Gary Adair took over the restaurant’s six locations when Rosemary retired in 2000. Adair and his family manage several Houston restaurant favorites, including Skeeter’s, Adair Kitchen, Bebidas, Betsy’s at Evelyn Park, and more.

Since the original Los Tios menu in 1970, more classics have been added including fajitas, homemade tortillas, and premium margaritas. Last June, the restaurant opened their newest 6,000-square-foot Los Tios location in West University.

What To Order

Start your meal with their delicious house frozen margarita, and chips and guacamole, of course. Next, try their popular Tex-Mex plate, which includes a taco al carbon topped with chile con queso, a crispy beef taco, and a cheese enchilada. Finally, end your meal with tres leches or sopapillas. Yum!
