As a lifelong Southeast Texas resident, Southern cuisine has a special place in my heart. I have fond and vivid memories of spending every Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house, the aromas of stuffing and fresh-baked pies buried in my subconscious, ready to be pulled to the surface any time my soul could use a little dose of warmth. When memories aren’t enough, I can always count on Gatlin’s Fins & Feathers in Houston to deliver those same cozy feelings. Not only one of the best restaurants in Texas, but in all of America, Gatlin’s serves up elevated soul food that’s comparable, if not - dare I say, better - than the meals I enjoyed in childhood.
Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll feel right at home in the elegant, yet friendly atmosphere. It’s upscale without being stuffy, with mahogany chairs, old newspaper advertisement clippings for tablecloths, and the nicest waitstaff you’ll ever meet. To me, Gatlin’s has a very New Orleans vibe, and I can’t get enough.
Now, let’s move on to the good part: the food. Open for brunch, lunch, and dinner, Gatlin’s offers everything from buttermilk biscuits to oysters to catfish platters to po’boys. Everything is perfectly seasoned, inviting you to close your eyes and savor each bite. Love is the first and most abundant ingredient in every dish, and you don’t need a refined palate to taste it.
If you’re anything like me and can’t finish a meal without dessert, you’ll be pleased to know Gatlin’s has quite the selection. There are several decadent options, but the pecan and apple pie slices seem to be the crowd favorites. For those who imbibe, the drink list is extensive and includes everything from wine to beer to craft cocktails. The restaurant also offers rotating daily specials and a kids menu.
