00:00:00

Does picturing a plate of fried chicken, mac and cheese, and greens make your stomach immediately start growling? You’re in good company! The combination is one of Houston Chronicle food reporter Erica Cheng’s favorites. She’s sharing the best places for crispy and delicious fried chicken. Warning: After reading this, you’re gonna want some chicken, stat.

The Chicken You Have To Try At Least Once

If you don’t want to lose your Houstonian card, you have to try Frenchy’s at least once. Not only is it Beyoncé approved, but this Third Ward favorite for fried chicken is beyond tasty. The Black-owned business, which serves New Orleans inspired Creole comfort food, originally opened in 1969 on Scott Street. Now, the restaurant has multiple locations across Houston.

The Best Unconventional Fried Chicken

Besides her greens and mac and cheese, Cheng loves a good Chinese chicken wing. She enjoys getting them from Hong Kong Cafe in Bellaire. If you go between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., they have a happy hour menu, where you can snag a Hong Kong style beverage, deep fried french toast, and a large, juicy chicken wing.

The Best Fried Chicken + Sides

If you’re looking for fried chicken and all the fixings, then make a trip to Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. Known for their flavorful chicken, Gus’s also has tons of sides like fried okra, fried green tomatoes, greens, and potato salad. The southern-style restaurant, which originated in Memphis, has two Houston locations.

The Best Spicy Fried Chicken

If extra spice doesn’t bother you, then add KRISP Korean Fried Chicken to your food bucket list. The Spring Branch chicken joint, which opened in 2020, offers double-fried chicken with a spicy sauce. While you’re there, add some fried dumplings, fried cheese balls, or truffle fries to your order.
