Is your New Year’s Resolution to volunteer more and give back to the community? If you’re looking for ways to help out in Houston, here are volunteer opportunities happening this month.
Help The Animal Shelters
The city’s animal shelters have been dealing with overcrowding for months. Help them out this month by signing up to volunteer.
- BARC Animal Shelter accepts teen and adult volunteers and you don’t have to contribute a minimum number of hours. They also offer group volunteer events on Friday and Sunday.
- Houston Humane Society needs volunteers to help with dog walking, adoption matchmaking, socializing with the cats, assistance in their wildlife department, and other tasks.
- Citizens for Animal Protection also needs teen and adult volunteers. They have teen service days, where teens can help homeless dogs by playing and walking with them in an enclosed park.
Serve on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
On Monday, Jan. 15, we honor the legacy of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. How can you honor his memory this year?
- United Way Greater Houston is hosting a book drive through Feb. 24 in partnership with Houston ISD. They’re looking for Houstonians to donate books featuring diverse characters and written by authors of color. The books will be given to elementary students in Houston ISD in March.
- University of Houston Downtown is hosting a service project on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Moody Park. They need volunteers to help with trash pick-up and clean-up.
- The Mission Continues, a non-profit organization that services veterans, will host a service project at Double Portion Church on Monday, Jan. 15.
- Help out at Blodgett Urban Gardens in Third Ward this Saturday and Monday. Volunteers will help steward the growth of winter vegetables in the garden.
Other Ways To Help This Month
- Volunteer with Feed The City Houston to make meals for people in need at King’s Bierhaus on Saturday, Jan. 13.
- Volunteer with the Houston Audubon Society, who work to protect the natural environment for birds and people. Join them on Saturday, Jan. 20 for a community day of trail maintenance, native gardening, and other tasks at Edith L. Moore Sanctuary.
Do you have other ways Houstonians can help out this month? Let me know.
