Every week, it seems like Houston has a new hot spot, from restaurants to art exhibits and more. Not sure what to visit, or if it’s better to skip it? No stress! Every month, I plan to break down attractions in Houston that are worth adding to your bucket list, or removing altogether. Houston’s immersive art exhibits are getting lots of attention. Which ones are worth the hype? Let’s get into it!
ARTECHOUSE: Visit
Many Houstonians are enjoying ARTECHOUSE, a new immersive art exhibit that opened last summer in the Heights. City Cast Houston Host Raheel Ramzanali, who’s been to almost all of Houston’s new art experiences, is a fan of ARTECHOUSE. He says the exhibit is worth checking out just to see Shohei Fujimoto's Intangible Forms. “This multi-media laser artwork is one of the most unique immersive art displays I've ever experienced and really takes you on a visual and auditory ride,” says Raheel.
The Color Factory: Maybe Skip It
The Color Factory is a favorite spot for Instagram pics for Houstonians, but City Cast Houston Executive Producer Laura Isensee thinks you could skip this one for another art happening on your list. She says: “Color Factory is great if you’re looking for that killer Insta pic. I liked one area where you sat down to draw a portrait of your date or friend. And some of their 10 rooms had more H-town vibes than others – I loved the tribute to Selena, Beyoncé and other strong women inside ‘A Royal (Disco) Ball’ room. But at the end, I found myself wanting a bit more interaction, instead of feeling like I had to pull out my phone to take more pics. It’s worth going at least once.” (Side note: Raheel keeps Color Factory in his rotation, especially for the kids!)
Meow Wolf: Definitely Visit
If you followed the “Where Is It?” pick this week, then you know that Raheel is a huge fan of Meow Wolf in Fifth Ward. Houston is one of the newest locations for the immersive art exhibit that launched in Santa Fe in 2008. Out of all the new artistic options in H-town, Raheel says this one is at the top of his list. But get this pro tip – he says don’t read any reviews beforehand, just go in and experience it! Houston’s Meow Wolf features a number of wacky and creative art exhibits, like Radio Tave that highlights art from across Texas. And who wouldn’t want to grab a cold one from Cowboix Hevvven, a one-of-a-kind honky-tonk where you can jam to Texas country music?!
Art Club at POST: Can’t Wait to Visit
Want to enjoy art and get your groove on? At POST Houston’s new Art Club, you can do both! This new museum, inspired by the iconic Day For Night festival known for fusing art, music, and technology, is now open. Walk through 90-minutes plus of interactive art that merges sound, video, and lasers. Right now, Art Club’s Season One highlights 13 artists and designers whose artwork has been featured at festivals all over the world. And if you still need Valentine’s Day plans, this is the perfect weekend to visit! Enjoy classical music from the Monarch Chamber Players on Friday. Then, on Saturday night, Art Club kicks off Club Mode, where guests can take in art and live music until 3 a.m. Spoiler: Nobody at City Cast Houston has visited this one yet, but it’s on all of our bucket lists!
