It’s the month of love, so spread some joy to those who need help in the Houston community. Below, I share ways you can give back and get involved around the city.
Help The Unhoused
- Take a day this month to help Bread of Life serve meals to those experiencing homelessness downtown on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Looking for Valentine’s Day plans? They still have spots open to help serve tonight.
- Volunteer with Homemade Hope, which provides help to unhoused youth in Houston. Help the children out by tutoring weekly or monthly, chaperoning a field trip, or creating an hour class or workshop for the kids to enjoy.
- Prepare and serve meals, help with laundry, and client intake at The Beacon on Monday through Thursdays.
Celebrate Black History Month
- Help rake leaves, clean up debris, trim trees, and with upkeep at the historic Olivewood Cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 17.
- College Memorial Park, another historic Black cemetery, is also looking for volunteers to help with cleanup on Monday, Feb. 19.
- Houston Museum of African American Culture also needs volunteers to help out with behind-the-scenes operations throughout the year.
- Third Ward is one of Houston’s historic Black communities. Here are different ways to give back to the community throughout the year.
Did I miss other ways to get involved this month or are you planning to try out one of these activities? I want to hear from you.
