June kicks off summer time in Houston! So how can you cool off, celebrate Father’s Day, and honor Juneteenth? I’ve got you covered below ☀️
The Best Ways to Cool Off
- I love making a trip to one of Houston’s local ice cream shops. My favorites include Milk + Sugar and Fat Cat Creamery. I highly recommend the dairy-free Chocolate Cookie flavor at Flower & Cream inside POST Houston, to my fellow lactose intolerant friends. Bebidas also sells snow cones throughout the summer.
- City Cast Houston Host Raheel Ramzanali enjoys avoiding the crowd at the main beaches and heading to Galveston Island State Park.
- Tired of pool days and Galveston? Grab a day pass for Lago Mar, the largest lagoon in the Houston-area. Also, check out Angel Lagoon in Dayton, which recently opened on Memorial Day weekend.
The Best Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day
- Take your Dad or that special father figure in your life to an Astros game at Minute Maid Park, during their three game series against the Detroit Tigers during Father’s Day weekend.
- City Cast Houston producer Carlignon Jones is thinking about taking her Dad to this grilling class hosted by Central Market Cooking School Houston on Father’s Day.
- Does your Dad like to laugh? Enjoy one of the shows at Houston Improv from comedian Tommy Davidson throughout Father’s Day weekend. A group of comedians also come together for a special show on Father’s Day at 4 p.m.
- Grab your Dad and the rest of the family for a movie night on The Strand in Galveston.
The Best Ways to Honor Juneteenth
- Make a trip to Galveston, which is the birthplace of Juneteenth. Take in the iconic mural honoring the holiday. You can also take the Juneteenth Freedom Walk to learn more about five historic sites important to the holiday. Enjoy two special screenings of “Juneteenth: The Galveston” story on Sunday, June 16.
- In Houston, Emancipation Park is the place to celebrate Juneteenth. Participate in a Freedom Walk & Run starting at 7 a.m. Later in the day, enjoy a jam-packed concert at 4 p.m. featuring Juneteenth Community Gospel Choir, Roi Anderson, Lil Nathan and the BigTimers.
