Love is in the air this season, and there are many romantic things to do around Houston without breaking the bank.

🥂 Picnic and a Show

Stop by Spec’s downtown location for provision — nuts, cheese, and mini bottles of bubbly should keep you within budget. Set up your afternoon picnic at the manicured flora and waterfall in McGovern Centennial Gardens, and catch a free show at the Miller Outdoor Theatre (the 2025 season kicks off in March).

  • Budget friendly bonus: Take the light rail from downtown to the Museum District.

😍 A Tour of Houston History

If history is your love language, take your partner to the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, originally built as a drinking water well in 1926 and repurposed into 87,000 square-feet of public space with art, music, and other activities. Walking tours are free on the first Thursday of each month, and there’s even a free guide to the birds and plants around the park.

💪 Work Out Together

Endorphins are good for the soul, so try a free fitness class at Discovery Green and fuel up afterwards at Phoenicia in downtown. City Cast Houston podcast host Raheel Ramzanali recommends the pesto chicken salad and the shawarma wrap.

🛼 Love on Wheels

For adventurous couples, the Dairy Ashford Roller Rink offers $12 admission and skate rental on Tuesdays. Rolling at Discovery Green opens Feb. 21, though it’s a bit over budget at $14 per person. If you’re more comfortable on ice, the rink inside Memorial City Mall is just $10 if you bring your own skates.

🥤 Grab a Drink

Sometimes chatting over your favorite beverage is the best quality time. Grab a coffee at Cafe Leonelli inside the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (admission is free on Thursdays). Or sip on some tea and buttermilk blackberry cake at Bistro Menil after a stroll through The Menil Collection, where admission is always free.

For bookworms, a coffee from Boomtown in the Heights and a stop at the new bookstore Good On Paper might just be the ticket.

For happy hour, The General Public has great deals daily and a $12 lunch through 3 p.m.
