Congrats! We’re almost out of January, which always feels like the longest month of the year. Now, it’s time to look ahead to February and celebrate love, Black History Month, Lunar New Year, and much more in Houston. I’m breaking down where you can have the most fun 💗

The Best Activities to Celebrate Valentine’s Day & Galentine’s Day

It’s the month of love! Whether you’re coupled up, want to celebrate with friends, or hang with the fam, there’s tons of ways to spread love. For Galentine’s Day, grab your girls and sweat it out together at this pilates session complete with champagne on Feb. 8. Next, mark your calendar for this free Galentine’s event at Trebly Park on Feb. 13, where you can create a custom bouquet, decorate cookies at Tout Suite, and make cards for loved ones. Then, on Valentine’s Day, Discovery Green is hosting a special free screening of Casablanca, complete with delicious food, crafts, flowers and chocolates. Want to try something new? Enjoy ice-skating, smooth R&B jams, and complimentary hot chocolate at Aerodrome Ice Skating Complex from midnight to 3 a.m. on Feb. 15. Bring the whole family to this free Star Party at Eastern Glades in Memorial Park on Feb. 15, where you can stargaze with the Houston Astronomical Society.

How to Honor Black History Month

How can you celebrate Black History Month? By supporting Houston’s amazing Black-owned small businesses! Book a staycation at the Wanderstay Boutique Hotel, a cozy adult-only hotel in Houston’s East End. During your stay, hop over to Pur Noire Urban Wineries, which made history as Houston’s first Black-owned winery and tasting room. Meanwhile, Houston’s bookstore scene is booming, and it’s time for you to explore! Some of my favorite Black-owned bookstores include Kindred Stories and CLASS bookstore, both in Third Ward. It’s time to also add Lit Java to your list, which opened last year in Pearland and provides a haven for book and coffee lovers. And why not spice up your month in Galveston at the largest Mardi Gras celebration in Texas?! They do it BIG on the island, with over 20 parades from Feb. 21 until March 4. After you’re done partying, grab a meal from Black-owned Soul 2 Soul Cafe, which serves up oxtails, fish plates, and other soul food dishes. Yum!

More Fun Happenings This Month

Check out this new play “The Heart Sellers” at Stages Theatre, opening tomorrow, and follows the journey of two immigrants who cross paths in a grocery store on Thanksgiving. Celebrate the start of crawfish season at Houston Crawfish Kickoff Festival on Feb. 22. Then, enjoy delicious barbecue and live music at Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo’s World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest on Feb. 27.
