Summer in Houston means more time to explore! Maybe there are Houston tourist attractions you’ve always wanted to visit, but never had the time. Whatever's on your summer bucket list, I'm here to help make sure the destination's worth it!
Skip The Houston Zoo
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Houston Zoo! However, during the summer, I find the long lines, plus sizzling temperatures, a bit unbearable. Instead, I would visit in the fall or winter. You’ll get to bask in the cooler temperatures and enjoy the zoo’s marquee events, like Brew at the Zoo and Zoo Boo. And, my personal favorite: the dazzling Zoo Lights during the holidays!
Definitely Visit Space Center Houston
City Cast Houston Host Raheel Ramnzanali always enjoys his time at Space Center Houston: “We pride ourselves on our Space City nickname in H-Town, but so few Houstonians actually visit NASA to understand why. This is such a fun summer visit because they have indoor activities, tram tours that take you to historic buildings, and simulators that both kids and adults will enjoy. If you really want to blast off with summer vibes, I highly recommend their Labor Day family overnight experience where you can sleep in a tent under a rocket!”
Skip Kemah Boardwalk
Many Houstonians love Kemah Boardwalk during the summer, but I think it’s a bit overrated and can get pricey. If you want an all-day ride pass for the amusement park, it’ll cost you $22 or $28 per person, depending on your height. That ride pass still doesn’t get you access to the Midway games or the arcade. So, if you’re trying to plan a fun and affordable day for your crew, it might be better to pack a picnic and head to one of Galveston’s beaches 🌴
Must Visit Miller Outdoor Theatre
City Cast Houston Executive Producer Laura Isensee loves this iconic performance space in the middle of Hermann Park: “Some of my favorite summer memories are from Miller Outdoor Theatre. The Fourth of July with a cannon salute and fireworks. A tango show, plus an empanada picnic, with a sweet date (now my husband!). The first opera that really drew me in. Don’t let the heat stop you. You’ll catch a breeze on the hill, and the performances will move you.”
Worth Visiting Discovery Green at Night
You may think visiting an outdoor park during Houston’s hottest months is a bad idea, but Discovery Green has so many nighttime events that make it worth it. For example, every Thursday in June you can participate in their Park after Dark activities, like line dancing or salsa. Shop their open-air market Flea By Night, featuring local vendors with vintage items, handmade goods, and more. New this year: bumper boats! Think bumper cars but in the water!.
