Happy Cinco de Mayo! The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory against French troops in 1862 — it’s sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, but that’s on September 16 — and in the decades since, it has evolved into a celebration of Mexican heritage in the United States. To get in the spirit, here are some of the best ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Houston.
Outdoor Festivities
Take your fiesta outside with a Cinco de Mayo Block Party at The Finn. There will be drink specials, a mariachi band, and plenty of traditional Mexican dishes from Papalo Taqueria.
The Original Cadillac Bar is also hosting a Cinco de Mayo Outdoor Fiesta that includes a taco-eating contest.
Food and Drink
Houston is full of great Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, so here are two staples for you. Los Tios has six locations across the city with everything you’d need for a proper Cinco celebration. There’s also Molina’s Cantina, known as Houston’s oldest Tex-Mex restaurant, where you’ll find all-day happy hour, mariachis, and damn good margaritas.
Speaking of which, margaritas get all the love — deservedly so — but did you know that the official cocktail of Mexico is actually the paloma? Made with grapefruit, it’s just as refreshing and delicious, so give it a try.

Take a Salsa Lesson
The Latin Dance Factory is hosting a special Cinco de Mayo Salsa Beginner Fiesta at Henke & Pillot tonight. Now’s your chance to take that lesson you’ve been meaning to take.
