Can you believe it?! We’ve made it to the last few months of 2024. Before we head into the busyness of the holiday season, I hope you can have some fun across Houston during October. Whether it’s grabbing a bite of pasta at Ostia, checking out a new play, or heading to the Texas Renaissance Festival — there’s tons for you to enjoy.
For Those Who Want to Celebrate Halloween
Are you looking for a thrill during the Halloween season that’s perfect for the whole family? Check out the Haunted Drive in Cleveland, Texas, which takes you on a scary 1.5 mile long drive-thru ride with frights along the way — but it’s not too scary for kids. While you’re there, enjoy their haunted hayride, maze, and other activities. Are you in the mood for a scary movie? River Oaks Theatre reopens this week, and all month long they’re showing a variety of thriller and horror films including “The Joker,” “Donnie Darko,” “Halloween,” and others. Spend the weekend before Halloween in your best costume feasting on a turkey leg at the Texas Renaissance Festival during their All Hallows Eve celebration.
For Those Who Don’t Want to Just Go to a Pumpkin Patch
Already tired of pumpkin patch season and looking to jazz it up a bit? What better way to enjoy the fall season than cozying up and watching a show at a Houston theater? I’m actually seeing Peter Pan tonight at Hobby Center, which runs through Oct. 6. Don’t have time this week? Then, mark your calendar for Main Street Theatre’s rendition of Joan Didion’s memoir “The Year of Magical Thinking,” opening on Oct. 19. Check out the Houston Grand Opera’s bright and colorful production of “Cinderella” starting Oct. 25. City Cast Houston host Raheel Ramzanali can’t wait to go to the Pakistani Literature Festival in Sugar Land, which will include book signings, poetry readings, film screening — and even an enchanting violin performance. Later in October cheer on Houston legend and Olympic champion Simone Biles as she performs alongside other award-winning gymnasts during the Gold Over America tour at Toyota Center on Oct. 19.
For Those Looking to Eat Something Tasty
I’m already craving this new $35 Power Lunch at Montrose’s Ostia, which will include their gnocchi, burger, Caesar salad, seasonal vegetables, and other delicious options on the menu. I recently learned that Raheel may be the biggest fan of pumpkin cheesecake ever, and eats it multiple times during the fall at Saltgrass Steakhouse. Finally, schedule a night out at Double Trouble Caffeine and Cocktails, a cozy bar near Midtown known for their tasty coffee and cocktail drinks.
