If you stick around Houston long enough, you realize our grocery store scene can’t be beat. Phoenicia, an international grocery store with many delicious options, has remained a Houston favorite for 40 years. So, how did this grocery store begin and become a go-to for Houstonians? Let’s dive in!
The Start Of Phoenicia
Zohrab and Arpi Tcholakian, who are of Lebanon and of Armenian descent, opened Arpi’s Deli in 1983, where they offered Mediterranean-style dishes, including their highly-popular shawarma sandwiches. The sandwiches are made with chicken, beef, or lamb, and then slow-cooked on a rotisserie pit. Next, they’re marinated with spices and wrapped in a pita. The couple began storing the ingredients used in their tasty dishes and customers took note. They wanted to buy the ingredients used in their favorite meals. Shortly after, the couple decided to open up a grocery store on Westheimer.
The Grocery Store Expands
As time went on, the grocery store became known as the place for Houstonians to get a delicious meal — breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They opened their second location downtown on Austin street in 2011. At the downtown location, you can shop at their massive grocery store, but also grab a bite from their award-winning MKT Bar. My recommendation: Try one of their artisan pizzas and then get gelato afterwards. You won’t be sorry!
Make Sure To Try This
Now that you understand Phoenicia’s history, here are some more recommendations for your next trip. Enjoy their fresh pitas or other Middle Eastern breads, which they make fresh daily. At the Westheimer location, make sure to stop by their coffee house and grab a warm beverage during this cold January. You’ll also want to add the weekend brunch at Phoenicia’s downtown location to your Saturday or Sunday plans. I’m still thinking about the chicken and waffles. Finally, their hot chocolate is next-level!
