Houston’s bar scene is always debuting a new trendy spot. However, La Carafe has remained a piece of living history in downtown Houston for generations. The Bar’s Rich History
La Carafe's building was originally constructed in 1847 and is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. In the early years, the building housed Kennedy Bakery. In the 1950s, the La Carafe we know today was born. The bar remained in the Kennedy family for generations, until it was sold to current owner Carolyn Wenglar’s older brother. Her brother passed away shortly after gaining ownership in 1987. Since the 1980s, Wenglar has maintained the bar — keeping a lot of the same staff and the architectural history intact.
What To Expect
La Carafe has a loyal fanbase, with some customers even getting married there and then bringing their children back to the bar. The cozy bar only serves wine or beer. On the menu, you’ll find some locally sourced Houston brews and a list of wines from around the world. Make sure to carry cash for your visit, because the bar uses an antique cash-only register. It's open everyday from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
