Houston Chatter: Should Houstonians Pay For a New Stadium?

Texans might build a brand new stadium to replace NRG, which hosts football games, concerts, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Right now, NRG Stadium and the surrounding NRG Park need more than $2 billion worth of repairs. There’s been ongoing questions on who should cover the costs — Harris County, the Rodeo, or the Texans, or some combination of the three. If the Texans move forward with a new stadium, taxpayers may cover the cost. Do you think Houstonians should foot the bill for a new stadium? Or should someone else?

Here’s how some Houstonians feel:

💰

Edward thinks the team should look into outside funding: “I am okay with a new stadium. Very little public funding. Build it somewhere, where you can get more for your buck. Like Downtown, The Woodlands, turn it into a huge complex, so it would be usable year round … My sense is that they could get this done using a little creativity. ”

🏈

Lucas thinks Texans should foot the bill: “Rich owner wants someone else to pay for his team to play 8 games in. Owners need to pay up.”

👀

Eileen does not want to help pay for it: “NOPE. If they want a new stadium, the team can pay for it.”

🤪

David thinks taxpayers footing the bill is insanity: “Let me see if I got this right: We’ve got a multi-billionaire football team owner, playing in a football league that’s so incredibly wealthy that the commissioner reportedly gets paid $64 million per year, and the average football team is worth at least $6.5 billion, and the Texans want the taxpayer to pick up the tab for a new playhouse? Do I have that right? Given that our infrastructure is crumbling, our roads are falling apart, massive flooding has become a routine event, and the city is facing massive budget shortfalls, how can anyone be stupid enough to support spending hundreds of millions (if not billions) to pay for a stadium to replace one that is barely more than 20 years old. This is insanity.”

🏆

Troy says this on getting public support for funding: “Win a superbowl and we’ll think about it.”

The Houston Chatter responses have been lightly edited for clarity.
